I painted this self-portrait in 1996 during Easter week. It is titled, "Mi Máquina." I share my love of the arts with sewing. I learned to sew in 4-H Club at the age of 10. This self-portrait was completed in April 1996. That is me in the photo…you see it is quite large. That is a ballet folklórico dance costume at my treadle sewing machine. Collecting these vintage machines is another passion. I enjoyed this painting so much, that once finished with the top half, I purchased another canvas to continue the painting. Thus, it is a diptych.
This painting is well-traveled. It first appeared on May 4, 1996, at the Allen Short Gallery, Stockton. It was a joint show between Comadres Artistas and Artistas de Valle at the “La Mujer” exhibit. In the photograph, it is hanging at the California State Capitol at my exhibit with Socorro Zuniga “Mirrors/Espejos” in May 1996. That same year it was accepted to the California State Fair’s “1996 California Works” exhibit.
