WHY I PAINT CAMELLIAS?

Updated: Apr 25

Yesterday, March 20, was the vernal equinox, marking it the first day of spring in the Northern Hemisphere. Today, I celebrate spring with a detail from a recent painting that included a camellia flower and bud. I place camellias (but not always) in my paintings because they are my city’s (Sacramento) official flower and I enjoy their beauty. I paint from the one camellia bush that will grow in my garden, Japonica, which blooms in fall, winter and lasts well into the spring.
